TEN THINGS TO “MEOW” AND “BARK” ABOUT FROM 2007
or
10 REASONS WHY I LOVE THE NORTH COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY

  1. 3,000*: the total number of cats, kittens, and “litters” that have been rescued since opening our first shelter in 1993.
  2. 209: the number of cats and kittens rescued, treated, and restored to both physical and mental health this year.
  3. 211: the number of cats and kittens for which staff found good, caring, loving, and safe homes. (A 5% increase over last year!)
  4. 189: the number of dogs and puppies in 2006 we assisted in adopting (our shelter grounds are offered every Saturday to dog rescue groups to converge and show off their foster rescue canines). The 2007 numbers are still coming in!
  5. Over 2,000 hours of volunteer time donated to the shelter by the community. (Does not include time donated by ten Board members, webmaster, newsletter team, or offsite AdoptAPets, Shop4theShelters, or outreach activities).
  6. $22,230: the cost to the Shelter for nearly 1,000 discount spay/neuter certificates given to the public (almost 500 of those used for female cats).
  7. NO outbreaks of ringworm or other infectious diseases due to a well-trained staff and visitor instructions & preventative measures.
  8. LOW Staff turnover, as with every year, while several volunteers who demonstrated extraordinary dedication to the Shelter animals were hired on as permanent animal care staff.
  9. CONTRACTUAL AGREEMENT between the Shelter and Science Diet Co. for the free, dried catfood for shelter animals, saving the Shelter money every year.
  10. REMODELING and construction of the new Intake Room, converted from the old Thrift Store garage, began and which is 40% percent completed.

*Sources include: cats from hurricane Katrina; cats rescued from hoarders; cats and kittens slated for euthanasia at the local pound; others found in dumpsters, stuffed in containers found along the roadside; abandoned at the shelter in carriers and cardboard boxes; left in houses when people moved away; otherwise neglected, abandoned, in danger, or left for dead in other containers or locations.
