Cerro Alto 4-H Shops for the Shelter

26 members of the Cerro Alto 4-H did a "Shop For The Shelter" for NCHS on Saturday February 23rd. The kids were at Lemos Feed and Pet Supply in Atascadero, at Pet Co in Paso Robles, at Food 4 Less in Atascadero, and K-Mart in Atascadero! They did this in one day! They sure did a good job in convincing shoppers of the need for supplies for North County Humane Society. Those shoppers brought the kids a bundle of things for NCHS. They also raised $168.00 as well! Thanks kids (and parents too!) Awesome job! If anyone has a youth group which would like to do a community service project such as this, let the shelter know, and we will help coordinate it.

NCHS RESPONSE to NEW TIMES ARTICLE of 2/14/08

Shame on you, Shredder, for making false and defamatory statements concerning the North County Humane Society. NCHS has not diverted funding intended for spay/neuter programs into “risky real estate investments”. In reality, the reverse is true.

The real estate investment you refer to had already been established by a benefactor who bequeathed it to NCHS as part of a larger legacy. For the past eight years, the interest from this “inherited” investment has supported daily care of our animal population. In addition, the interest has underwritten fees to make adoption costs more affordable and supplemented our spay/neuter account.

Because of this, NCHS has been better able to serve our community by offering additional funds to serve a greater population. Furthermore, NCHS is the only no-kill shelter of its kind in SLO County. No animal has ever lost its life directly or indirectly, as a result of NCHS spending. In FACT, over 3,000 animals have been rescued from neglectful situations, other “kill-shelters” and certain euthanasia. They found sanctuary at NCHS while waiting for adoption.

Had the Shredder called or visited NCHS, our staff would have happily provided the correct information. To publish inflammatory information without any attempt at confirming these allegations is irresponsible journalism. In addition, the Shredder has potentially damaged the reputation of a non-profit organization that has been supported solely by private donations for the past 31 years. Next time get your facts straight.

Sincerely,

Maddy Nager, President
Martha Pedersen, Vice President
Geoff Condon, Director at Large
Sandy Rakestraw, Director at Large

WON'T YOU PLEASE HELP US?
North County Humane Society has been helping the Feral Cat Sanctuary feed over 150 cats in addition to the 300 that North County Humane Society cares for. The food supply is dwindling......the number of needy cats increasing. While shopping for your pets, please help us by purchasing an extra bag of dry cat food for those who have no one except for a few dedicated volunteers to care for them.  Donations may be dropped off at NCHS at 2300 Ramona Road, Atascadero.

Please call NCHS at 466-5403 if you have any questions regarding this. Thanks so much for helping those who cannot help themselves.

SHOP FOR THE SHELTER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

NCHS does a monthly Shop for the Shelter. This entails spending approximately 3 hours, usually on a Saturday, asking shoppers at local grocery/department stores to donate items from a list of things that NCHS uses regularly. If you are able to volunteer for this, you are helping NCHS in a tremendous way. Please call the shelter if you are interested in helping or if you have further questions.

Featured Cats

TY
COLTON
GUNTHER
BURKE
Ty is a DSH brown tabby about 10 months old.  He is an easy going fellow who loves people just as much as he loves his friends in the shelter.  He has a soft touch and a gentle way about him.  Would do well with other cats and with children.  He makes you want to reach out and touch him.
This male brown tabby is best friends with Gunther! He is about 2 years old and is a fat cat with a teddy bear heart to him. He has never been around dogs, and he does not mind the other cats but really wants to be in a family with children.
Beautiful DLH Gray and white, around 2 years old. This is another beautiful cat that likes dogs, children, and other cats. He is young and loves to play.
Burke is a lynx point Siamese. He is about 3 years old and is a good-looker if there ever was one. His cool blue eyes can look into your soul and read your every mood. He will be your perfect and constant companion, if you just give him the chance. Come on, come and look into his eyes and see if you can resist him.
